Sustaining
Our Oceans

Building Healthy Relationships with Oceans
in South-East Asia through
Education for Sustainable Development

The UNESCO project’s ‘Sustaining Our Oceans: Building Healthy
Relationships with Oceans in South-East Asia through Education
for Sustainable Development (ESD)’ aims to help local
communities learn about the ocean and deepen their
understanding of marine ecosystems. It contributes to the
United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable
Development (2021–2030) by empowering communities
through education to address environmental challenges.

With support from Fast Retailing Co., Ltd., the parent company of
UNIQLO, the initiative fosters knowledge, skills, and a sense of
responsibility among young people to protect the marine
environment. It equips them to take sustainable actions in their
communities. Now more than ever, we need ocean stewards. This
initiative provides young people with hands-on learning
experiences that inspire active engagement in marine
conservation. Together with peers, teachers, and local residents,
let us work toward a healthy ocean and a sustainable future.

Field Lab Toolkits

Learners will explore real-world locations, gather data, and learn to live in harmony with the ocean. By encouraging them to draw from experiences of people living in fishing villages and small island communities, the toolkits encourage learners to develop context-sensitive knowledge.
